Rivalry

I learnt of “Writer’s Island” from the posts of Rambler and decided to try my hand at the prompt for this week.
I have always found it tough to pen something based on a subject given to me, but this topic (though given as the bonus prompt for the week) hit the right note with me. So my first attempt at answering a prompt is this one.

Empty phrases
Thrown in for good effect
To woo each other
Words bandied back and forth
Using perfect similies
Unexpected metaphors
Gaining each others’ attentions
For those precious few seconds
Before we parted
With our partners for the evening.

Waspish statements
Meant to strike a chord
A chime perhaps
Of the times we broke each others’ hearts
Taking up stances on either side
Not defending,
Oh no, defense was never what we believed in
Outdoing each other
With barbs sharpened with satire and polish
We fence around
Wounding each other now
In this stage
And people consider it “harmless rivalry”
Between two who used to be friends.

  1. “Waspish statements” and “harmless rivalry”! Particularly loved those words. Enjoyed the metaphors through the poem!

Welcome to our writing world at Writer’s Island! I am still fairly new, but loving it! It’s becoming a weekly habit!
