Elusive
The spark that tempts one so
A little jack o’ lantern
Leading down the path of temptation;
Grand passion
Can this be
What the troubadours sang of
In long-forgotten times?
Dark
Raging
Tempestuous
Feelings that lash out
From the prison of well-honed manners and skills
Thrusting
Piercing
Screaming
For an outlet;
Facades
Masks
Maintained
For the sake of propriety
More, for the sake of self-preservation;
Love
Or is it just lust again
A desire, a need
Of the body
Rather than the soul;
Alas, the body feasts
And the soul starves
Neglected, yet again;
Above, the vultures circle
Ready to feast on the remains
Of what once was a throbbing life
Now looking at the world with dead eyes
Carrion racing and fighting each other
For the spoils of yet another lost soul.
“Masks
Maintained
For the sake of propriety
More, for the sake of self-preservation;”
very interesting..

Ooh, this is a delicious poem. I love the way you emphasized some lines by making them only one word, that was very effective. Great writing!
