Out of the closet

Now for those of the readers who got to this post by googling for confessions of my fantasies regarding my best girl friend (like I am going to let you in on them anyway) or for any other questionable entertainment, get out of this page, pervo!

If you are still here, then lend me your ears, erm, eyes anyway.

I decided to clean my closet out this weekend and rearrange my clothes in a bid to change me – I mean I decided to say goodbye to the impulsive me and say hi to a more organised uncluttered CR (stop laughing already now) and the first step was getting my wardrobe organised, something I estimated would take me about 20 minutes or so, considering that I usually keep my clothes clean and well-pressed, even if they get a bit bundled now and then.

But with the new meticulous me, I decided to order them by use – daywear, eveningwear and nightwear. The one in me who likes to think that she is improving by the minute decided to try and break them up further, so now I had

1) Daywear – For weekdays

2) Daywear – For weekends

3) Eveningwear – For coffeehouses and movies

4) Eveningwear – For those dazzling lights and strobes and earpiercing, mind-numbing nights of clubbing (not that there have been a lot of those recently)

5) Nightwear – Pyjamas – I wouldn’t mind being seen in by girl friends

6) Nightwear – Other nightwear

Having proceeded this far, I began to bifurcate my clothes into six piles on the bed. While doing this, the statistician in me decided that it would not be a homogeneous group and that I would have to break them down further.

So, I began to try and order my daywear for the weekdays as daywear I would wear in Chennai to office, daywear I would wear for meetings in Chennai, daywear elsewhere in India (which would also be for the meetings elsewhere) and daywear when I expect to meet a few friends in the evening anyway.

Daywear for the weekends got broken into – weekend wear for just hanging at a friend’s place and watching movies, weekend wear for movies at theatres, weekend wear for going to Mocha and Amethyst during the daytime and weekend wear for other coffee houses.

Evening wear for coffee houses and movies was further divided as – Evening wear for Mocha and Amethyst in the evening, evening wear for other coffee places, evening wear for movies in multiplexes and eveningwear for a movie at a friend’s place

Evening wear for clubbing got divided into – Evening wear with friends, with colleagues and with a mixed group.

Nightwear – Pyjamas stayed that way (thank God) whereas the other nightwear got divided into stodgy cotton gowns that I would wear at home and some real good lingerie for myself that I would never let my parents catch me in.

The point of having such lingerie when you are single is to be one up when you watch those romantic comedies and SATC or desperate housewives. If you have ever sat by yourself watching said stuff in a prissy little outfit on a Saturday evening , you would understand that lingerie helps you feel better – you behave like the evening was a choice of yours.

And rearranging my clothes took me the better part of Saturday and also left me with one realisation – I really have no clothes, dividing them into these heaps, I estimated that I have just one of a kind for some of these outings, which calls for more shopping.

And I haven’t yet started on the shoes and bags.

I have a feeling I need to stop catalouging them anyway, it just might get too expensive for me to handle.

P.S In case you did not get it, I am obsessive about being exactly dressed for the occassion, which would explain why I began to try and check what clothes I had anyway.

P.P.S If you are a man and are rolling your eyes at this post, well, phbtt to you too!

P.P.P.S If you are a woman and are rolling your eyes at this post, then you are really lucky or just have too many clothes anyway (which would mean you are really lucky).

I always thought there were symbolic significance to the whole activity of cleaning up one’s closet…

but this sort of detailing would put even MONICA ( err from Friends?) to shame..

and yes.. while we are confessing .. am rolling my eyes .. yes .. but out of sheer envy!

    Cheers!

  4. Heh. My mum tries to get me to do a cleaning spree of my wardrobe once a month or so. It never really helps. I guess I’m just challenged that way! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

But heck, the fact that you have that many occasions to sort clothes into – ๐Ÿ˜ฎ !

Well, it did take most of the day, but was worth it in the end ๐Ÿ˜€
And this is the first time I tried organising my closet.

I agree, I did realise my count was way too low after organising ๐Ÿ˜›

I always thought I was more of a Phoebe ๐Ÿ™‚
And yes, the decluttering was symbolic, I am turning over a new leaf and becoming a practical sane person ๐Ÿ˜›

Mum should threaten with giving away all your clothes to someone else if they are not put away
    As for the occassions, ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. my closet is organized very simplistically: by color – regardless if it’s dress, skirt, pants, or top. you, my dear friend, have topped us all! i hope your efforts paid off….

Well, we will discuss this, I assume ๐Ÿ™‚

Organising by colours sounds like a good idea, unfortunately mine would be two piles – 90% in black and 10% in miscellaneous ๐Ÿ™‚
And so far, the planning seems to have made my life much simpler ๐Ÿ™‚
